Mis en scene is the arrangement of everything that is seen within a frame. If it is physically part of a set and within the camera frame it is a part of mise en scene.

Effect

Mise en scene is everything inside one set. It changes the whole each scene. It effects the whole visual image of the film. In the hobbit battle of five armies scene the effect is shown through what is seen and used in each set for each shot for scene.

Peter Jackson is the director of the film “The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies”

Film Plot: Adventure Fantasy film, that is based in midevil times. In the hobbit trilogy follows bilbo and the dwarves one last time, as the armies of the necromancer come towards the Lonely Mountain. Men, elves, dwarves, orcs and goblins come to sword and bow point with eachother in the last installment from Peter Jackson the battle of the five armies.

We will be analysing the scene: “When Dain arrives.” In this scene Dain Lord of the iron hills also known as “Ironfoot” arrives with his army or dwarves. Just before the five armies are all within sword and bow point of eachother and start an all out war.

Film Technique 1

Costume – In a film costume is used to help portray the film. If the film is set in a certain time the costume style includes all the accessories and clothing worn at that time period.

For example the batman costume. It makes the audience immediately know that it is batman because of his costume. It’s part of the character in the film.

Describe

The effect it gives to the audience is to show what the ancient warriors would wear during their time. It demonstartes an old style that shows what the costume would be worn in that time. It helps the audience understand each character better through costume. The technique helps the audience understand the character very clearly as each type of character has their own costume. Gandalf is known for his wizard costume. His grey robe and wizard hat, with his magic staff and big beard. Whenever this is seen the audience thinks of the gandalf character if referring to this film series. The costume effect adds meaning to the film by giving the impression of what each character represents. In this scene the leaders of each army are clearly defined. Dain or Ironfoot has a costume that is slightly different and unique to the rest of his army to show he is the one in charge. Each army has a different costume representing a different characters. Thee dwarves have bulky silver armour to show that they are of the dwarves army. The sprites have light and gold armour that shows that they are of the sprite army. Without these costumes you would not tell the difference as clearly if you did not have the costume technique. The costume adds to the film genre because the costumes have unique features that are usually thought of as part of the fantasy genre. Gandalfs wizard costume is apart of the fantasy genre. Costume has a big part to play in the mise en scene and can easily alert the audience of the movies genre.

Explain

The director intended to make the film believable by using costume. To make the audience be intrigued by the unique use of the costume designs. The director wanted the audience to think about each characters aspects and personality based on their own unique costume. He wanted the audience to be able to indentify each army in the scene based on their costume. Peter Jackson wanted the viewers to portray each character and base them around their warrior costume. He wanted the audience to ba able to follow the story with each character and believe in the fantasy. Each character has their own costume to make the audience think about the characters. The characters costume makes you judge the characters traits and what the character should be like in the film. Peter thinks that the costumes have to be creative and unique for each character so that the audience will think of the film as fantasy because no one would ever wear those costumes but it would be a fantasy if they did. This effects the audiences thoughts about the genre.

Film Technique 2

Props – In film props are anything that is physically used by the actors of the film or play to add effect and reality to the film.

For example when in this scene of battle of the five armies a lot of the props used are swords and other weaponry. A object used in a film by an actor is a prop.

Describe

Props effect the audience in this sequence because under the fantasy genre the audience wants to see what props are used in when and where to show the story’s key events. Like when gandalf uses his staff, he would only use it during certain key point of the film. Each character has his/her main type of prop that is special to tha character. This helps the audience single out characters and believe the fantasy genre. The prop technique does add meaning to the film as it helps the film come to life. Without the nesacary props any movie wouldn’t be as good as what it is. If a sword in this movie was substituted for a rubber duck it be ridiculous and stupid because in this genre you have expect certain props to be used in a fantasy world that needs to look realistic. Props add the genre of fantasy as it make the fantasy more interesting and watchable. The ring that the hobbit has is a major prop that makes the genre of fantasy so much more fantastic while still not being real but fictional and magical. That is what the fantasy genre is.

Explain

The director intended to make ordinary objects be seen as magical and mythical objects that have great capabilities. He wanted the props to do this as it makes the genre more entertaining. Peter Jackson intended that this scene should make the audidence mainly think about the war props. In order to make the audience believe in each army and think about there fighting style which is based on each armies weaponry. He wanted the audience to be able to easily tell the armies apart from each other. Peter Jackson wanted the audience to think about the props as the magical objects of the film. He wanted the audience to engage with the film through the props. The ring in the hobbit is a major part of the film series. The ring changes each character and effects the whole film. Without it the film wouldn’t be the same. Each character in the film has his/her own prop. The prop will usually be a weapon of choice specially made for that character or some sort of magical object that has meaning to the characters background. The genre is effected by props because each prop used is based on the genre of fantasy. Fantasy is about magical elements and powers. The props used all have something special and magical about them. Some are just simple weapons like swords but they are made for the different characters. Without these props the audience wouldn’t be able to indentify the genre as clearly or enjoy the film as much. The director intended for the audience to help see the genre of fantasy through props and other techniques.

Film Technique 3

Colour – Is used by having different amounts of lights on set during the film to make the light come from a certain direction to add effect to the scene.

For example the coloured armour to show each different army for their unique outfit.

Describe

Colour is a minor but big part of the mise en scene film techniques. Colours represent moods and atmosphere of the film. For example the sprites wear gold armour this representing that they are of high prestigious, expensive and of high quality armour. The colours change the viewers visual thoughts. This film is mostly basic colours and dull because of the chosen setting.

Explain

The scene doesn’t have a large variety of colour because I wanted the audience to be able to understand what they are seeing. Which is that they are about to see five armies battle. Red is representing blood and death during this scene. Because that is the reality of war and we needed the audience to believe it. Colour can change the mood of everything. As the mood is trying to show warriors bravery the simple colours of armour, weaponry and blood as this is a fantasy war in place. Colour is used as a part of mise en scene to show the mood of scene and bring life to the film.

Film Technique 4

Setting – Is the place that the film is placed in. The background of film.

For example a home or a certain country or city or even a car. It is the place that is used in the film. Wherever the actors are is the setting. If they are on the moon the setting is the moon etc.

Describe

It effects the audience knowledge about what is going on and why what’s  happening is happening. If it is in a dark and gloomy place evil may lerk there and if it’s in a bright and colourful forest it may be in a good place and no evil will lerk there. The setting helps the audience to understand the technique setting because it shows where the place is and why it is there. Most settings are based in one place e.g a kingdom such as the kingdom under the mountain and usually there are one or more characters to go with that certain setting. They change all the time from a beach and to a forrest the change isn’t usually to extreme because it may effect the scene or movie and chnage the whole film which is usually a bad thing depending on the film.

Explain

This may help the audience understand the character because setting may demonstarate a characters personality or meaning to the movie/book this can be shown in how the setting is portrayed e.g where the place is where they live or based in. It does because it shows that characters have a meaning in a place or time because if they where in the future then they are in the future if they are in a poor time it maybe in the past. It adds to the films genre because it may demonstrate a time or place e.g in war it may be a action adventure or in a space ship with alien activity it will be sci fi.

Summarise

Mise en scene is a very important part of the whole film process. All four main techniques involved effect the films outcome and result. Without these techniques the fantasy story of the film wouldn’t be told as best possible. Mise en scene is needed in any film.
