Film Techniques in Little Miss Sunshine

In the film Little Miss Sunshine (2006) directed by Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton reasons why film techniques are important because without them no one would be interested in watching the film. Some of the film techniques that are the most important would be the dialogue because it shows the level of the characters thinking, in this case it is the way Olive speaks constantly wanting to know more, costume because it shows what type of character they are for example olive dresses like a tomboy, and last camera angles because they show how the character feels or how the character sees things. An example of this is when Olive is watching the miss USA pageant and is watching the winners every move.

At the beginning of the film when we first meet Olive we see that Olive is not your typical girl. She is more comfortable wearing boyish clothing and comfortable shoes. The film shows Olive as a tomboy because of her always wearing a muscle tee with shorts, Chuck Taylors, clunky glasses and she always had her hair ties up in a ponytail. Later on in the film when Olive is performing her dance at the beauty pageant she was wearing a tuxedo shirt with a tie and some tight leopard print shorts. This film technique shows how Olive has decide how she wants to look and how she feels about fashion. What we can learn from this is that everyone has different taste in style and no matter how different you look and how different you are it shouldn’t stop you from doing anything that you want to. The director wanted to show us that if you wanted to do something and you look different there is nothing or no one stopping you. They are also trying to show the idea of what true beauty actually is and that it’s not about how you look it is about how you feel and how you see yourself.

The camera shots in the film make Olive seem like she has big dreams of becoming a beauty pageant winner. When we first meet Olive we see her watching a tape of miss USA and it went from a extreme close up to a medium shot, to an over the shoulder shot showing olive copping miss USA when she won and showing that Olive had a dream of becoming a pageant winner. That first scene shows a deep contrast between miss USA and Olive. It shows the big difference in apperance in the outside but not what Olive is like on the inside. We see that these camera angles and shots show Olives dreams of becoming m a winner of many beauty pageants to come. The belief of becoming miss USA gets crushed when the family get taken to the police station and the family get banned from entering a another beauty pageant ever again. What we can learn from these shots is that camper shots can change an image of how someone looks and how they feel. What the director is trying to show us in these scene is that you don’t need to be beautiful to win a beauty pageant and you should keep believing in yourself no matter what.

An important film technique in the film of Little Miss Sunshine is Dialouge. Dialouge is shown throughout the film through each character. Olive and her family are on their way to get Olive to the beauty pageant. The have to stop and stay in a hotel for the night. Olive is sharing a rom with her grandpa. Olive is feeling worried about the whole situation she is afraid that Richard will be disappointed in her if she loses. She is starting to feel like she is too different from the other girls she has seen in beauty pageants. Olive is feeling upset and crying a little and she asks her grandpa if he thinks she is pretty. “Grandpa, am I beatiful?” Her grandpa responds in a way that shows her beauty within. The Dialouge in this seen helps us understand Olives feelings and thoughts. It also helps show the connection with Olive and her Grandpa. From this we learn that Olive really wants to be in the competition and believe that she can be the winner, that she won’t give up because she is a bit different from everyone else. The directors intention from the Dialouge in this scene is to simply show how beauty pageants make some girls feel bad about themselves and that they shouldn’t worry about what others think of you on the outside.

Key film techniques in the film Little Miss Sunshine are, costume, camera shots and dialouge. From these techniques we have learnt that film techniques are really important to make the film interesting and helps the audience explain and understand each character. The director wanted to show how beauty pageants are a typical stereotype, that each girl should be beautiful and have all the best personality traits a person can have. In real it makes not so beautiful girls feel bad about themselves and effect how they think differently with everything they do. The film techniques explain how the audience can understands the character of Olive with costume, camera shots and dialouge.

Reflection

I have learnt that scenes can be broken down and sorted out to show that each part of the movie that completes the puzzle.

So now I can interpret and analyse a scene from a movie and explain how the scene completes the movie. By simply watching it and comparing it to the movies theme.
